Tail Work
๐๐ปIn the next couple weeks we will share some techniques that we have found valuable for the horses comfort and relaxation. The aim is that owners can use these techniques in their own time with there horse. Some are fortunate and can still see their horses in this time whilst others are less fortunate. However, save these techniques and play with your horse once you get to see them again.ย ๐๐
Today’s one is very basic just to start you off getting the feel for this.
We startย with tail work.ย ๐๐
This is very simple. Find the dock of the tail with one hand. Hold it gently making sure not to grasp the tail. With the other hand just below the dock hand find the tail bones or Caudal Vertebra in the tail. Gently, once you have found your first tail bone start to move the tail in small circular motions then pause, move downwards to find the next tail bone(but keep the dock hand at the dock) and start to circle again until you reach the very tip of the tail. Minimum of 3 mini circles for each Vertebra and going both directions
Once you have completed this you can also lift the entire tail into two hands as you stand side on and slowly make big cirles to the left then to the right moving the tale as one unit. Minimum of 3 circles each side.
Gently lower the tail to its natural position.
Do not grasp or hold onto the tail if your horse may need it ‘back’ simply start where you left off.
Note, your horse may breathe out heavily, or lower his head as a sign of relaxation and release.๐ด๐ด
This technique should relax your horse and he should enjoy the tail work. A relaxed tail is essential to the mobility of your horses entire spine for free movement.
